Today's Webtip: The Hackbus

Taking the word on the road.

The last couple of years has been an amazing time for hacking and d.i.y. culture. The explosion of hackspaces and activity centers has taken the wealth of online information and brought it back to the pysical world.

The only problem with it, is that most of the fabulous workshops and spaces are located in major urban centers. As someone who lives in a somewhat smaller urban center, I was missing out on a lot of the fun.

In a peak of enlightened self-interest I shared my frustration with some of the most proficient activators I know. Johannes Grenzfuhrtner and Günther Friesinger encouraged me to submit the idea for a mobile hackspace to NetzNetz and the Hackbus was born.

Now the Hackbus core-team (Roland, Sarah, Johannes, Heather, Günther and myself. Frankie had to stay home) is out and about spreading the word on hacking, d.i.y. culture, guerilla art, and any other fun stuff someone might want to offer a workshop in.

Last weekend we were in St. Pölten, taking loads of pictures of the Jugendklub/300 festival, and spreading the joys of LED Throwies.

Right now we are in Barcelona, at the Mozilla Drumbeat festival, hanging out with a lot of people who are very interested in the future of learning.

Next week the bus will be back in Austria, and planning for the next round of workshops and actions should begin.

But we could use your help. The most valuable asset of the Hackbus are the people and ideas it transports. I've already spoken to some people who have ideas for workshops on Arduino for artists and kids, building light sensitive synthesizers, home made screen printing, and of course the standard assortment of electronic basics and digital documentation, but we need more.

If you have, or know anyone who might have ideas for workshops that you need to make happen, let us know. You can either drop me a line through my contact info here, or you can do it through the hackbus.at or hackbus.info sites. For the most up to date info you can also go here.

The AT site is the local bus, and the .info site is for people who might want to get their own mobile space moving.

So please, help us get this show on the road...
