One author's perspective on the economics of free.

I've been an active participant in the creative economy for as long as I can remember. From self published comics and fanzines, to bands, videos, sculpture and commercial graphics, I've spent all of my working life inside of, or around, the so-called creative industry.

Sometimes I even made some money with the fruits of my labors. Sometimes I had to find other ways to finance them.

Maybe that's why I find the whole copyright discussion so fascinating. The impact it can have on our lives seems massive to me, touching on issues well beyond simple financial gain.

One of my favorite voices in the whole copyright debate has to be Cory Doctorow. As annoying as I occasionally find him, I still enjoy reading his perspectives on the subject.

In a recent article for the Guardian website, he responds to another Guardian writer who has taken issue with some of his beliefs. It might be an interesting article for anyone who is trying to wrap their heads around the realities of creating content in a post-analog economy...
