Today's Webtip: KeePass

one way to tame the password jungle.

Remember when a password was something only secret agents and treehouse owners needed?

In the case of the treehouse (or blanket fort, cardboard box, or hallway cupboard) it was usually just series of knocks. The same knocks almost everyone else always uses. Which is why security was pretty weak, and anyone could get in anywhere.

These days most people have multiple accounts that require passwords. And many people just use the same one across every system. It's understandable. Passwords are hard to remember. Secure passwords are even more difficult to remember. Working on systems that require you to change your secure password on a regular basis makes it all even more difficult.

Which is why password managers have become popular. Most browsers offer a simple system to save your passwords for frequently visited sites. Which is cool, unless you end up accessing sites or services from multiple devices or locations.

There are some commercial systems available that make things much easier. Some even work across systems.

But the most widely available system I have found so far is KeePass. It's an open source project that has versions running on almost everything, from the usual desktop suspects, to smart phones, and even not so smart phones that can run java midlets.

They even have standalone versions that you can run off a USB stick.

And to help you get your password situation in order, here is a useful little article from LIfehacker. It's worth a read.
