Today's Webtip: Battery Basics
I've been playing with an Android phone for awhile now, but it wasn't until my great iPhone meltdown after the iOS 4 update that I really started to come to terms with it. As much as I liked the possibilities Android offered, the abysmal battery life of my Nexus One kept me from using it on a daily basis.

But since downgrading the iPhone to 3.1.3 would have been just as annoying as troubleshooting the N1's battery, I decided to buckle down and get the battery up.
After quite a bit of reading, various experiments, a quick root and flashing a custom ROM, I finally have a smartphone that manages to remain conscious for a couple of days. I still wouldn't mind getting my hands on the most recent Apple product, but the possibilities offered by Android, combined with the massive improvements of the latest system update means I might just sit out a few generations...
One of the things I realized after my research is that battery issues are anything but rare. There are so many different Android handsets out there that it's hard to make generalizations, some are set up properly from the factory, and some need a little bit of help. Since the Android system does a few things very differently from Windows Mobile and iDevices, it's still worth taking a look at the various settings and how they might impact your battery life.
The How-To Geek has an excellent post on Android battery basics. He goes into decent detail about the various settings and options available to users of non-rooted, stock phones. Understanding them and using them wisely should be enough to get some serious improvements on the life expectancy of your Android device.
Those of you who want to get even more out of your phone can do so by rooting it and installing custom ROMs. Maybe I'll take you through some of more interesting tips and tricks in the future...
