Today's Webtip: pjs4ipad
One of the major complaints some people have about mobile computing (and iOS devices in particular) is that you can't actually make anything with them. Great for consuming, not so great for creating.
Since it's been more than possible to actually create and edit audio, video, and photos for quite some time, it's an argument that doesn't really hold much water. The one thing that HAS been hard to create on a device, however, is software.
Which is a shame. These pocket processors could be the killer hardware for a rebirth of something like Hypercard. Something that probably isn't going to happen.
There is an alternative though.
Processing. Processing "is an open source programming language and environment for people who want to create images, animations, and interactions. " It's not quite Hypercard, but it's being used in much the same way Hypercard was in the early nineties.
So what does that have to do with the mobile computing platform of your choice?
Well, you can now use that to make mobile Processing projects. Pjs4ipad "lets you create Processing.js apps that can be run and edited directly in HTML5 browsers and will run offline. Currently tested with Mobile Safari (iPad, iPhone, Android 2.1, iPod touch, Chrome)."
This is so many sorts of cool, I can barely contain myself. Processing has me super ultra excited, because it gave me some hope to be able to get back into making some of the projects I used to imagine back in my days as a digital-media-artist-wannabe. And being able to do it on my favorite toys is even better.
The pjs4ipad project site is a here and includes a video example. If you are already familiar with Processing.js and just want to jump in on your device, than you should probably go here: jepstone.net
If you aren't familiar with Processing but want to find out more you can start at processing.org and get an idea of what's possible by checking out the Processing posts at www.creativeapplications.net
