And now for something completely different.

Since we are going to be doing a series of radio reports and online stories focusing on operating systems this week, I thought I would kick things off with some background information.

Most of you are probably already familiar with the big three.

Linux, Windows and OSX have pretty much become a part of everyones day to day life. As a matter of fact, you could argue that operating systems should be added to sex, politics, and religion when it comes to things you don't discuss in polite company.

Before we start busting out our flamethrowers and asbestos suits, it might be a good idea to provide some basic, independent background information on the stuff we will be discussing.

operating-system.org is a fairly comprehensive collection of reviews and information about OS's past and present. The information is presented in a levelheaded manner, and those of you who would like to take a look beyond the status quo can have fun reading about such classics as Plan9, BeOS, QNX and OS/2.
