Today's webtip: Falling down the Analog Hole

or, home taping is killing internet piracy. Is the Walkman back?

Of course not.

And the reason is that portable analog media sucked. Sucks. Will always suck.

Records were bad enough, and as a budding young audiophile I was all to aware that every play of my records was one more towards their ultimate death. Not that vinyl was any fun for fans of the long format concept album. Getting up to flip sides really sucked.

Taping the albums saved on the vinyl, but the music industry didn't like it much, and of course walkmen were bascially portable tape destroyers. It was never a matter of if, it was always just a matter of when.

But it's a waste of my time to tell you about this. The BBC did it so much better by convincing an unsuspecting 13 year old to trade in his portable digital media device for a Walkman. 30 years after the release of the late 20th century icon the summary of someone who missed out was basically "I'm glad I missed it."

Here is the BBC version for you multikulti types:

And here is Der Standards take on it:

This might also be the best place to point out that it appears as though the Pirate Bay has been sold. I don't know how important that is to the bigger picture, I just like the idea of mixing news about home taping and file trading.
