Today's webtip: Applied Diamagnetism

or, to quote a friend: "Holy Floating Frogs, Batman!"

Magic is cool. It's fun to watch, and can be a great way to spend the night out. But.

It's all just an illusion, and for those of us who like our excursions out of the everyday to have some substance, it's a fairly hollow experience.

Science on the other hand...

Take the trick of levitation. It looks pretty cool when some caped dude convinces his assistant to hang around in mid air for awhile. Except for the fact that your mind knows it's all just a trick. And that's what makes watching a floating frog so much cooler than any magic act.

Because that floating frog is really floating, which means your mind can't get all cool and say "I know how they did that". Or, to be more specific, even if you know how it works it doesn't change the fact that holy cow that frog is floating!!!!!

Um yeah, anyway it's all magnetic fields and stuff like that which you can probably go and inform yourselves about. Personally, I just like watching the frog float.
