Today's webtip: Stainless

it's like a trip down memory lane. 515KB to be precise.

I still remember the first time I installed Phoenix. It would have been the fall of 2002 and I was stunned by the tiny size, speed and complete and utter lack of bloat of the little browser that could. The little browser that started out as a spinoff of the massive Mozilla project and eventually morphed into the Firefox we know and love and helped to overthrow the ancient Mozilla code.

Mesa Dynamics

That's what I was thinking about as I downloaded the few hundred K that was Stainless. Stainless is a tiny little webkit based browser for the Mac that started out as a proof of concept and has evolved to become the Mac version of Chrome. A version that will run on PPC processors, is available now and doesn't have any ties to major corporations with a hunger for your data.

It's tight and fairly fast and you can open up tabs that will run as their own processes and keep their cookies in memory so you can have multiple accounts of the same site open simultaneously.

And that's about it. This is a seriously no frills Browser that offers one or two advantages to the biggies and cuts out the bloat.

It's fantastic.
