Today's webtip: Open Culture

because free doesn't always mean it hasn't been paid for.

In this case, there is a lot of material out there that has been generated in the process of doing other things. Like teaching. Or, in some cases, learning.

Some of the more illustrious learning institutions have done a darn good job of making material available for the general public. M.I.T. for example, has gone beyond just offering some of their courses through the Open Courseware Initiative. Now they have made it a school-wide policy to make scholarly articles published by it's faculty available to everyone, for free. This isn't just a small step for mankind, it's pretty darn nifty too.
