Today's webtip: Twestival 2009

One more example of taking online offline.

One of the most frequent criticisms about various social networking services and online life in general, is that it isolates the individual behind a wall of silicon, virtualising human social interaction, and in the end makes the pariticpants anti-social shut-ins.

In other words, it will turn even the most normal person into a basement dwelling keyboard jockey. It's really just the repackaging of an ancient nerd stereotype.

The funny thing is that when I am in Vienna, I really AM a basement dweling keyboard jockey, and it has been things like twitter that have actually made it more likely that I might crawl out of my cave to spend some time with people. It's not just that I can maintain contact with like minded people who might like to do things together. Sometimes the medium itself becomes the party.

Yes the oldschool Chatter Treff still exists. For twitter users (and those who might be thinking of becoming one) they are called Tweet-Ups and the next one is Twestival 2009. It will be held at the WerkzeugH in Vienna. It's not just a get together, it's a party supporting a charity, so you can get your social on while helping people in developing countries get access to sustainable clean water supplies.

Anyway, there is a whole lot more, but that's what the website is for. You can find out all the details and how to get tickets there.
