Today's webtip: Serious Pizza

It's more than just a cheesy slice of life.

Pizza is serious business. Pizza can lead to the kind of fanaticism many people would only associate with football clubs and painted faces. Yes, pizza can be the stuff of legends.

I grew up in an area that served mostly Chicago style pizza. I didn't know it at the time, but the extremely thin and crunchy crusts, heavily topped with thick sauce and cheese and cut in a grid were the hallmarks of Chicagos less famous pie, The Chicago Thin Crust. Obviously different from the famous Chicago Deep Dish.

Of course, people from New York would tend to say none of the above are actually Pizza, but just bread with cheese and tomato sauce. They might be right, but since I never managed to find a piece of New York Style that wasn't anything other than greasy and tasteless I guess I will just have to agree to disagree with most of that city and its fans.

Pizza in Austria was quite a surprise for me. Totally different from anything I had encountered in my previous adventures, I eventually found one or two favorite locations in the City. Most of them were, oddly enough, owned by egyptians.

The bass player from my punk band, had spent some time working as a pizza chef in Zagreb. He had one of the greatest recipes for pizza crust I have yet run into, and I still miss the Pizza and Football sessions we used to have back in the day. I also miss the recipe, and would do anything to get it back...

Which all sort of brings me round to the point of today's post.

There are a few interesting sites out there focused on the fine art of making Pizza.

Slice is a pizza blog. They have some interesting articles, especially for people interested in exploring the many regional expressions of tomato sauce and cheese on baked dough. They also have lots of pretty pictures.

http://pizzamaking.com is a forum. A forum about making Pizza. This is where you can get down to the business of finding your perfect pie.

Yes, they are American sites, but don't let that disuade you. Americans just get more obsessive about stuff, which is why they will put together forums and websites dedicated to things like finding the perfect Pizza.

Trust me.

The only German language site I have been able to find thus far is this: http://www.pizza-abc.de
And it's a sad little site indeed.
