Today's Webtip: The Return of the Thin White Duke
What a weird day it's been. I never really realised just how many people had been moved by the art of David Bowie.
As a pre-teen in the midwest I thought he was one of those special secrets no one else knew about. Well, no one other than my small crew and my best friend's older brother.
His music was rarely played on the main rock station in my home town, and it was a lot of work to track down his records. The search usually ended in some small record store filled with people who made my mom nervous.
Although, now that I think of it, I guess he must have been big enough for the other kids to know enough about him to want to beat me up for being a fan.
Whatever the case, my (and a lot of people's apparently) timeline exploded with shared memories of the man and his music. Eulogies from famous musicians, obscure video appearances and lots and lots of music. I wish something like that could have happened while he was still alive.
I'm sure Neil Gaiman wishes the same thing. Or at least that he had actually shared one of his stories with the man who inspired it. He thought about it, but never quite got around to it. So he shared it with us instead. It's a lovely bit of fan fiction featuring some equally lovely illustrations by Yoshitaka Amano.
