Today's Webtip: Lousy Book Covers

More proof that just because you can doesn't mean you should.

Graphic design is hard. Well, good graphic design at least. Learning to use the basic tools is actually pretty easy, but just because you can figure out how to open a graphic program doesn't mean you should share the results with the world. Especially when you are using those results to sell something else you have made.

Need proof?

lousybookcovers.tumblr.com has boatloads. Its's a collection of covers from self published books on Amazon.

Far be it from me to disparage anyone's attempt at doing it themselves, whatever that it might be, but I would also like to encourage people to try to do it right. Sometimes that means finding someone else to help you.

So go check out those covers, check out the books (some of them might actually be worth reading) and then go hug your local graphic designer/illustrator. Better yet, pay them a decent wage, don't offer them shitty contracts, and whatever you do, budget for it.

You really do get what you pay for.
