Today's Webtip: Ecomodder

making any auto more efficient.

I've been looking for new wheels lately. The trouble is, I'm a serious cheapskate. If it's not electronic I have a hard time getting myself to pull out my wallet. I keep translating the purchase into how many shiny new devices I could have bought.

Priorities. Mine are skewed.

And personal transportation equals a lot of shiny. Buy an old beater and you can look forward to spending loads on fuel and annual repairs. Buy a new car and, well, I can't even begin to think about that. The multiple digits make my head swim. And actually sitting down to figure out which option is cheaper over a 10 year period always makes me dizzy.

So I always end up looking for something old. And I always really wish I could get myself to buy something with really high fuel efficiency.

It's a nuisance.

One thing that has made it a bit better for me, was discovering the ecomodder crowd. These are people dedicated to improving the fuel efficiency of whatever autos they might have at hand. It turns out that there is a lot you can do by just driving a little different. My personal experience has been a 2 liter drop over the last couple of days, from 7 to 5l/100Km. That's without any of the more extreme suggestions I have run across.

In other words, I was doing it wrong.

But that is nothing compared to what some people have accomplished. One of the better sites focusing on eco modding is named, oddly enough ecomodder.com They have loads of tips, some of which can even be applied in Austria.
