Today's Webtip: TVMobili
Some of you might already have run across the term DLNA server. Others (possibly a bit older) might be familiar with the term UPnP media server. And other might just be scratching their heads at all of the hubub about media lockers and cloud storage.
In the end, all of these things are just attempts at making it easier to get at your media files no matter what device you are using, or where you might be. Rather than worrying about just which files you have synced to which devices, you could use these things to stream your goods from a central server. In the case of DLNA and UPnP media servers, they would most likely be located somewhere at your home.
From that server you could then watch or listen to files with a PS3, or from an iOS or android device, from another computer, or from any of the various media streaming boxes that are showing up all over the place.
And if you have had a Mac, and thought about setting something like this up to play with your shiny PS3, you might have hit a brick wall.
One of my friends did, and that's why I was happy to run into what might be a solution for him, and anyone else looking to have to worry less about where they actually have their files.
www.tvmobili.com is the home of a cross-platform DLNA media server that has been getting some fairly decent reviews. It has pooped up in almost all of the threads I have read looking for a solution, and it is free and cross platform. If you haven't had this problem yet, but HAVE been getting annoyed at the whole file syncing thing, it might also be worth taking a look at.
