Today's Webtip: Vienna 1900
One of the questions I am frequently asked is, "Why did you come to Vienna?". It's one of those questions that used to freak me out. It always seemed like people were surprised that a midwest townie would end up in Vienna Austria. I was never sure if they were surprised about the midwest bit, or the Vienna bit.
Working form the midewest angle, the only answer could have been, "I had to go somewhere, and New York sucked."
Assuming it was the Vienna bit, and the result of some strange kind of inferiority complex, didn't make the question very easy to answer. It would have to start with Ernest Hemingway and Paris, and end somewhere outside of Bemidji, MN.
And centered around Vienna at the turn of the 20th century.
A Vienna that has a few fans in Germanics schools in the U.S. I know there was one at Concordia college in the 90's, and there must be a few at the Univeristy of Washington, because they have a site set up dedicated to it.
It's probably the ugliest site I have run across this year, but there is some good reading there for fans of ancient history.
