Today's webtip: Buffy vs. Edward

Because Edward makes Spike seem like the well adjusted boy-next-door.

Vampires are cool. They make great subject matter for all sorts of media, and have even been known to deliver an excellent song or two.

And as most of us are probably aware by now, the reason vampire stories can do so well has a lot to do with the fact that they tend to be thinly veiled allegories of sexual romance. In the good stories, the Vampires get to be wanton hedonists doomed to an eternity of devouring the pleasures of the flesh while unable to actually participate in them. In the not so good ones the main characters do their best to "maintain their humanity" by denying their nature and living an eternity consumed by guilt, with all of the usual trappings of the classical addict.

In other words, sex and drugs and violence. We all know how that works out.

And then we have Twilight.

A vampire story that managed to creep me out like no other before it. Not because of any particular displays of blood or gore or *gasp* sex, but because it seemed to be the vampire story of the purity ring generation. If LeStat was Rock and Roll, Carlisle Cullen (Edward's father) would have been at a purity ball (an event in the U.S. where teenage daughters make a pledge of virginty, to their fathers).

Of course, there has been plenty of articles written about this, but the easiest, and by far most entertaining way to illustrate would be to point you toward a video mashup made by Jonathan McIntosh of rebelliouspixels.com.

Buffy meets Edward. You can probably guess how it ends...
