Austria: Tax Reform
It’s been a long time coming but Austria is finally getting a major tax reform. It’s being described as the most significant reform in the history of the Second Republic. Low paid workers will benefit significantly but some measures to reduce tax evasion will not be popular.
Terry Pratchett
He sold more than 85 million books in 37 languages and was best known for the Discworld series of fantasy books; the great satirist and fantasy author Terry Pratchett died yesterday at the age of 66 after a long battle with a rare form of Alzheimer’s disease. A man who enjoyed life, Pratchett also fought for the right to die with dignity.
Ukraine
The ceasefire in east Ukraine continues to hold but tensions remain. The OSCE says it’s not getting all the information it needs to monitor the movement of troops and weapons, there’s a general concern about the rule of law and a number of high-ranking supporters of ousted president Viktor Yanukovych are committing “suicide”: one of them apparently stabbed himself 12 times! Andrew Wilson, author of "Ukraine: What it means for the West" paints a bleak Picture.
Uncontacted Tribes
They live in small communities in some of the most inaccessible regions of the world and most have only been seen from planes flying over their tiny forest homes. They are the Uncontacted Tribes and they are facing a number of serious threats to their existence from displacement to land grabs to destruction of their traditional homelands. We speak to Fiona Watson of Survival International.
