Selma at 50
On March 7th, 1965, 600 civil rights protesters headed out of the town of Selma, Alabama towards the state capital Montgomery. They got only as far as a nearby bridge, where police deputies and state troopers attacked them with clubs & tear gas. The violence stopped the marchers' first effort, but 2 weeks later, under the protection of US Army troops, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. set off for a second attempt. It became one of the most pivotal events in the history of the civil rights movement and gave rise to a new Voting Rights Act, that effectively transformed the voting system for African Americans. Exactly 50 years on, we look back at those events and find out how much has really changed. And what is the conversation today in 2015 about fairness
& civil rights across America?
