Hej Fredrik! Tack för Plattan!

Unser schwedischer Freund Fredrik Lager ist einer mit vielen Pseudonymen und vielen musikalischen Vorlieben. Am besten bekannt ist er als Freddie Cruger oder Red Astaire und spätestens seit dem D’Angelo remix Follow Me und seinem Album Soul Search (Raw Fusion, Tru Thoughts, 2006) ist Freddie mit Produktionen und remixes weltweit in den Plattentaschen zu finden. Die neuerste Veröffentlichung in Albumlänge heißt Waiting for Spring von Linn & Freddie (Homegrown/Vigoldia) in deren Mittelpunkt Seele und Herz stehen. Die soulige Stimme von Linn Segolson - eine Dame mit Gospel-Hintergrund - verschmilzt (!) fast mit den beats von Freddie. Da haben sich zwei gefunden! Von nichts zu viel oder zu wenig. Nothing more to say. Just listen!

Es gehört viel dazu als MC ein ganzes Album zu tragen und für mich ist es selten möglich ein Solo Rap Album komplett anzuhören, ohne nach dem vierten Song das Gefühl zu haben, man wisse wie es weitergeht. 16 tracks bilden Skeros Memoiren eines Riesen in denen er es schafft auf seine typische, unberechenbare Art glaubwürdig und real seine Geschichten zu erzählen. Er macht das mit einer äußerst vielseitigen Stimme, bei der ich mir manchmal unsicher war, ob Skero selbst rapt. Gast MCs gibt es auf der Platte nicht viele - braucht er auch nicht. Man hört die Routine und Erfahrung, die er als Teil der wichtigsten Rapgruppe Österreichs gesammelt hat, aber man merkt auch wie gut es ihm mal tut alle Strophen für sich zu haben. Mehr hört ihr von und über Skero auch demnächst bei FM4 Tribe Vibes.

Our mate Rob B got back from Tokyo a couple weeks back. He had a great time there and came back so inspired that he decided to drop a new mix.

DJ Beware

Good stuff in the mix, bass heavy and drummy (is that a word?) are the best words to describe it. Catch Rob doing a DJ set on the 19th June in Zona with Joyce and me. Also catch him doing live shows with the Stereo MCs in Europe over the summer. Rob told us that they put in a whole bunch of new songs and remixes into their live set, so don’t miss it!

Beware's wise words

Today we kick things off with a brand new tune from Jay Z - D.O.A. (Death of Autotune). It's taken off the forthcoming Blueprint 3. There's a big hype surrounding this album, as there is for almost every thing that Jay Z brings out. On this D.O.A. tune, as Jay Z addresses the issue of too much pop in rap, and how he's going to bring back the real hip hop. Jay also raps This isnt politically correct, this may offend my political connects, as he feels he might be offending some of his peers by saying that autotuned vocals is ringtoned music.

Inevitably, a tune like D.O.A. causes people to say things like Jay Z is bringing back the real hip hop, or yeah, autotune is wack, or oh, Jay's calling out all these weak rappers etc. Functionist and I, personally, don't really care about all this real or fake hip hop talk, nor do we think that the autotune topic is an interesting one. The truth is, we just appreciate the record because the beat is dope (No Id on the beat!) and yeah, Jigga's flow is on point. But what he's saying, seriously, isn't really that groundbreaking. Its just a street record, real rap record, a very good one no doubt, similiar to way that 99 Problems was from the Black Album. Not Jay Z hating here, definitely fans of the Jigga man, just offering our own little perspective here.
