Dr. Auma Obama: Yes She Can!

She's not standing in anyone's shadow. Check out what's on her mind, this Saturday as of 12 midday on an FM4 Saturday Reality Check Special.

On the train to Krems, I had a mantra on a loop in my head:
Resist the urge-resist the urge-resist the urge.
I was on my way to interview Dr. Auma Obama, Technical Advisor at CARE's Sports for Social Change Initiative Program, author, Germanistic scholar, and elder sister of the first African American President of the United States.

I had done my research and I totally understood why Dr. Obama does not discuss her little brother with the media. She's amazingly accomplished in her own right and she has a mission to fulfill which can certainly be helped by her surname but which comes down to her smarts, charm, dedication, and humanity.

When I arrived in Krems and was greeted by the organisers of the conference which Dr. Obama was attending there, I knew it was going to be a good day. The young men and women at Globart are pulling together to really make a difference in the world and their communal drive and positivity is infectious.

Dr. Obama's vibe proved to be infectious too. I brought her a copy of the latest Falter and told her about FM4 and she was genuinely interested and impressed. We laughed on several occassions and my nerves settled quickly and I think she enjoyed the exchange we had.

In fact, I'm certain Dr. Obama felt chilled because she actually talked about her little brother with me. Without me asking. That was a real honour and I'm chuffed to be able to share those words with you but it will be a source of pride for the rest of my life, to have met a woman as inspiring, wise, and as eloquent as Dr. Auma Obama.
