FM4 Unlimited with J. PHLIP
A member of Claude VonStroke‘s flock, San Francisco’s J. Phlip debuted on the Dirtybird label in 2008 with her single ‘Rumble Rumble’. After being selected as one of URB‘s “Next 100” in 2009, things have definitely been on the up for J.Phlip, who has been turning heads with her party rocking skills and productions alike.

The following is a bunch of questions that I asked her over email after having met on a sunny afternoon at Maria am Ostbahnhof in Berlin.
What are you up to and how are you finding life in one of the European capitals of dance music?
I'm loving it! It's the usual struggle of balancing gigs, production, music, life, and networking (aka partying your face off hehe.) Considering Berlin is quite a party city this makes it a bit more difficult. I think I'm doing pretty good so far, besides that one slip up at Bar 25. But it was so worth it!
What's going on in the San Francisco house and techno scene?
There are a lot of hometown heroes in SF, DJ's you've probably hardly heard of outside of SF. But these guys get to play the most badass parties in the bay area that the majority of globetrotting DJs will never get to play.
It definitely seems that the 2 most distinctive sounds that have come directly out of SF have been the more old skool SF house sound (Miguel Migs, Jay J, OM, etc) and the more current San Francisco Bass (as I've heard a lot of people from over here calling it.) Right now San Francisco is known for its combination of tech, house, bassy, silly, fun, and booty! And yes there are definitely records that work way better in SF. Its just that SF flavor that everyone loves, but not everyone outside of SF quite understands it. San Francisco is a wacky place with no rules - thats why I love it so much!

After all these years having established as a dj and producer, do people still make an issue about you being a female in this male dominated scene?
I never have an issue with being a girl except that sometimes its hard to fit all my shoes in my bag when i gotta lug so many records and cds around :)
So whats the first thing that you're going to do when u go back home? What releases, remixes etc. coming out that we should look out for?
SRSLY the very first thing im going to do is go to this all-you-can-eat SUSHI buffet that is absolutely AMAZING!!!!!!! And then maybe have a bloody mary at Zeitgeist - they are the BEST EVER! Look out for my remix of Justin Martin's "Get Low", hopefully some new original stuff on Dirtybird, and a few collaborations with Catz n Dogz and Justin Martin :)
J.Phlip will be playing at Postgarage in Graz tonight on Friday July 16th, and tomorrow in Sass in Vienna on Saturday July 17th.
