Today's Webtip: Towel

Before the Wikipedia, there was the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. Not the book, or the film, or the radio play (although they were indeed all there) but the website. The massive encyclopedia filled with articles contributed by researchers across the planet.
H2G2 was originally put online by Douglas Adams way back in 1999. When the net company behind it went belly up (as so many did back then) it was taken over by the BBC and continues to live on doing what it does best: Serving up potentially useful information with a bit of wit and attitude.
Nothing new. It was a webtip once long long ago.
But now you can get it on your iphone.
The app Towel uses the BBC's mobile version of H2G2 to provide you with the next best thing to actually having a functioning guide. It includes access to the articles, a towel, and a Sub-etha Sens-o-matic that would possibly (assuming some aliens were indeed hanging about in this part of the univers) hitch you a ride on an unsuspecting starship.
The app creators homepage includes a blog about the development, as well as some links to useful things for Guide fans. Links to a few important stops on the web. I'm sure you might enjoy them, even if you don't have one of those nooty portable media communication devices.
